Real Lifers ♥ to serve!

What an awesome week at Real Life!

On Monday, we all learned how to eat and stay healthy! We learned that texture, color, and temperature are three things we should think about when planning a meal. After learning a little bit about our nutritional needs, everyone made their own collage-style "perfect plates!"After this, we went outside and played games (because eating healthy isn't the only part of staying healthy! ;) )!

On Wednesday, many of the youth went to hear from professionals about different careers. They also learned a little more about colleges and majors! For everyone who stayed at the Columbus Center, we had a fun day making bracelets! Real lifers learned about the brief history of bracelet making, different knots used to make bracelets, and what different colors meant (ex. Green=Responsible). Everyone had a blast making bracelets and sharing ideas with each other.

This is a very family friendly event. So invite your family, friends, co-workers, heck.... even the guy from the local 7-11!! Just make sure you are there. You can visit www.wasatchrollerdeby.com for tickets or you may contact someone from one of the three teams.

Here's a little history and some videos on the Derby in Utah! It is so fun and INCREDIBLE!
Unbeknownst to local “sports” media, Utah is now entering its eighth year of women’s roller derby—with a handful of changes.Wasatch Roller Derby started their 2012 season last month, and recently made an impressive showing at the regional Big O tournament in Oregon (and outright won the Spudtown Knockdown in Idaho last fall). WRD’s home teams remain the Black Diamond Divas and the Hot Wheelers, and they’ve created a second travel team in addition to their Midnight Terror: The new Bonneville Bone Crushers. Local bouts will be held at WRD’s home, the Derby Depot
The Salt City Derby Girls, the OGs of local derby, are finally making good on last year’s promise of becoming a banked-track league; Wasatch Roller Derby is now a traveling force to be reckoned with on the regional-competition circuit; Ogden’s Junction City Roller Dolls have absorbed former rivals O-Town Derby Dames; new league Happy Valley Derby Darlins has launched in Spanish Fork; way down south, there's the startup Moab Roller Derby; up north, rec league Red Rockettes and men’s league Uinta Madness are still rolling.

Real Lifers are College and Career ready!

This week at Real Life was packed with awesome experiences concerning colleges and careers!

To start off the week, we all went to the University of Utah. To help us get more familiar with the campus, we had a huge scavenger hunt! It was really fun to compete against each other to see who could find all of the items first! It was also a really good way to get to know a little bit more about the University of Utah!

On Wednesday, we had our last 4H class! Again, these classes are all about educating us on different topics such as bullying and building healthy relationships!

Kenya Team raises over $800 for microenterprise loans!

On Saturday, April 7th, we held a micro-enterprise fundraiser “Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt” at East High School in Salt Lake City. At the meeting earlier that morning our team stuffed over 1500 plastic Easter eggs with candy that were later scattered on East’s back softball field that were later collected up in a frenzy by approximately 150 people.

We raised $808.00 from tickets, raffle tickets, and donations from the event and handed out over $1000.00 worth of gift certificates and prizes including gift cards to Barnes & Noble, The Cheesecake Factory, Amazon, and VIP tickets to the Living Planet Aquarium!

Peru Team is rockin' the Local Service

Our Peru team has been making great strides in local service lately, here are just a few of their stories!

Sophie has been volunteering at the Sunshine Terrace Foundation in Logan Utah for her main site service hours. She is there twice a week and can't stop thinking about this place! She takes the residents to lunch, therapy, or to play games, she also just gives them good and welcome company. Since many of the residents don't have anyone who will visit them they really enjoy when she comes by and hangs out with them.

Peru is Serving it Up!

Isaac’s main local service site is at the Gayle & Mary Aldred Senior Center. He has completed more than the required 40 hours there. Isaac didn’t know this place existed until he was looking for a local service site but has come to really love his time spent there. He has done a variety of things while being there including: doing Meals on Wheels deliveries, helping on the “Dial a Ride” bus to take homebound seniors around to run errands, helping with lunch duties and activities at the center. Thursdays are a treat there as he helps the seniors play Wii Bowling! Mostly he enjoys spending time talking to different seniors. Pete, a senior who spends most of his time alone, now lights up whenever Isaac is around and always asks when he’ll be coming back. He has met incredible people and has done things that he wouldn’t normally do. Isaac has been a dedicated volunteer there and has certainly made a difference!

Ruth spends her time volunteering at the ELC (English Learning Center). There she helps teach refugees English. She loves every minute of her time spent there. Ruth’s favorite part is hearing the stories of the refugees she works with. She has learned a lot from the trials and suffering they’ve endured and feels lucky to be able to spend time with them. She also enjoys being around their boisterous personalities and learning how connected everyone really is. Ruth is outgoing and has killer personality. She beams happiness and because of these qualities, she has touched the hearts of others while they have definitely touched hers.

Christine chose to volunteer at Real Life for her main service site. She enjoys getting to know the kids, joking with them and seeing their excitement for whatever activities they are doing that day. Her most memorable day there was the day they had a few guys from a break dance group come and teach them some moves. At the very beginning, they got in a big circle and each took turns in the middle, showing off their own moves. Christine was so impressed with the teens and how talented they were. They were then able to work in small groups with the dancers so that they could all learn something to be successful with. Christine said, “It's amazing what happens when we can take something they LOVE and use it to help them build confidence. To me, that's what Real Life is all about.”
The picture we’ve included was from the day they designed and spray painted t-shirts.
