Real Life SLC - Celebrating Culture

We've had some awesome activities over at Real Life the past two weeks!

Last Wednesday, we participated in the Mondo Art Project and drew pictures that the Cambodia team will be taking with them. The project is meant to facilitate a cultural exchange. Real Life participants had a blast drawing pictures describing their culture!

On Friday, we had a variety of fun activities pertaining to culture!
We started off by learning different types of dances around the world. We learned how to do the swing, salsa, and an african dance!
We then broke into two different groups and grabbed a buddy. One group made "candy sushi" while the other group was busy face-painting.
Cayla is very concentrated while helping SoeMae and Rehka with their sushi candy!

Rice crispies, swedish fish, and fruit by the foot.. yum!

The finished product :)

The other group is busy painting national flags on each other's faces!
AK is drawing on a volunteers hand.

And, of course, what's a day at Real Life without a game of missionary tag? ;)

Real Life in Salt Lake City

We had a week full of fun over at Real Life the past few days!

On Monday, we made Valentines cards and cookies for our secret "valentines." We had tons of fun delivering the valentines and playing lots of games!

On Wednesday, we had an extreme break dancing clinic! Everyone showed off their sweet moves and gave tips to each other. We have some SERIOUS talent in our group!

Finally, on Friday we went ice skating at the Gallivan Center.

We experienced some falls...

And smiles...

A little fear..

And a WHOLE LOT of fun!

Everyone had a good time learning how to ice skate and using teamwork to get there. Thank you Ellie Briggs for the great hookups!

P.S. Check out this adorable story in the South Salt Lake Newsletter! Two Real Life boys found a wallet (with $800 in it!!!!) and turned it in to Julia! At Real Life, we learn what it means to be honest, kind, and cooperative individuals. The boys demonstrated these traits incredibly! Way to go guys.

Kenya Team...Moving Right Along!!!!

First to start off, CONGRATULATIONS TO MARINA McKEILL FOR ALREADY COMPLETING ALL OF HER SERVICE HOURS. Marina spent majority of her time volunteering at the Living Planet Aquarium in Sandy. Marina said, "At the aquarium we help out all of the guests that have questions about our animals as far as what they do and their habitat, life expectancy, etc. The staff there is so amazing and always greets everyone with smiles and they are just all around fantastic and the volunteer coordinator (Melissa Bowers Thailand Team) is Awesome.  She makes everything fun!! I love volunteering because you learn new things each time you go and the kids and the adults get so excited about the smallest fact. It's a great place to volunteer." Thanks Marina for all of your hard work thus far. You are on a roll. I know that the service that you did was much appreciated. ALSO congrats to:

No better way to have fun! The Peru Retreat

Our Peru Retreat!

Who could think of a better way to get to know your team than spending the night at the Youthlinc office? Certainly not me, because I had a blast! This retreat was one to remember, we played lots of fun games to get to know everybody and learned lots of new things about our team members.

Once Britnie told us the announcements and upcoming events for the next meeting, we split off into our individual committees and planned out what we would be doing in Peru and what we would be doing locally to raise money for supplies and other necessities. In my committees, Cultural Committee and Construction Committee we discussed fundraising opportunities and different ways to bond with the locals in Yanamono. Once the business part of the retreat was done, people really started to cut loose.

We had a delicious South American themed buffet dinner to get everyone pumped for the trip and everyone brought their part of the meal.
After dinner, we played multiple games including Reverse Pictionary and several Get to Know You games. They were all very fun and it continued until about 1 in the morning.
